HURIWA Appeals to Tinubu for Release of Borno Abductees

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has made an appeal to President Bola Tinubu to support efforts aimed at securing the release of about 80 schoolchildren and teachers who were abducted in Borno State. This appeal was made in a statement by HURIWA's national coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, on October 11, 2026.
The abductions occurred in separate incidents in Mussa and Lassa communities within the Askira/Uba local government area between May and June 2026. HURIWA reported that between 40 and 44 children were taken in the first incident, while 36 pupils and a teacher were abducted in the second incident.
The organization called for improved coordination among security agencies and urged the federal government to provide regular updates to the families of the victims. HURIWA also recommended a review of the Safe School Initiative to enhance measures for protecting schools and communities from future abductions.
