Okocha Reveals He Pays Brother for 'Jay-Jay' Nickname

Augustine ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, a Super Eagles legend, disclosed that he continues to pay his brother for the nickname "Jay-Jay," which originated from their childhood in Enugu. Okocha explained that in his neighborhood, many boys were named Austin, leading to his friends identifying him as "Austin Jay-Jay’s brother," named after his elder brother, Emmanuel, who was known as ‘Jay-Jay’.

During an appearance on the Obi One Podcast, Okocha reminisced about playing football on the streets with his brothers, stating that they had no other toys. He later adopted the nickname "Jay-Jay" officially because people abroad found it challenging to pronounce his birth name, Augustine.

Okocha humorously mentioned that he still pays royalties to his brother for the name, attributing a good omen to it. Throughout his illustrious career, Okocha played for clubs such as Eintracht Frankfurt, Fenerbahce, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bolton Wanderers, becoming one of Nigeria’s most celebrated footballers.
