IATA Urges Protection of Civil Aviation Amid Middle East Crisis

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has lamented the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, particularly the conflict involving Israel and Iran, urging states to uphold their obligations to protect civil aviation. IATA represents 360 airlines, accounting for 85% of global air traffic.

In January 2026, global passenger demand increased by 3.8% compared to January 2025, with a load factor of 82.0%. However, the organization is concerned about the negative impact of current hostilities on projected growth for 2026.

Major Middle Eastern carriers, including Emirates and Qatar Airways, have suspended flights indefinitely due to the crisis, which has affected approximately 2,500 flights daily. IATA's Director General Willie Walsh noted that while demand remains strong, the uncertainty surrounding the conflict and rising fuel costs could hinder future growth.

The report also indicated a 5.2% increase in global seat capacity by March 2026, but emphasized the need for states to ensure the safety of civilian aviation amidst ongoing tensions.
