Igbokoda battles health crisis nine days after NAF plane crash

Unrecovered bodies and environmental contamination fears prompt Ondo State to order fumigation and alternative water supplies for coastal community.
A Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft went down on October 5, 2026, plunging into swampy terrain adjacent to Igbokoda in Ondo State's Ilaje Local Government Area. By the ninth day following the disaster, all 25 persons aboard remained trapped within the wreckage.
The extended period without recovery has generated alarm throughout the locality, with residents reporting intensifying foul odours and mounting apprehension regarding potential pollution of the water supply that sustains the community. Local inhabitants and traditional authorities have demanded accelerated state and federal intervention.
Oba Afolabi Odidiomo, who serves as Igbokoda's traditional ruler, warned that decomposing victim remains alongside potential leakage of aircraft fuel represent grave hazards to drinking water supplies on which the populace relies. The monarch together with residents have persistently urged both tiers of government to hasten body retrieval and restoration of the contaminated environment.
In response, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa's office has implemented protective interventions. The Ondo State administration ordered river fumigation operations at the crash vicinity, while distributing respiratory protection and medical supplies among Igbokoda inhabitants.
Planning has also begun for supplementary potable water delivery systems to limit consumption risks from compromised sources. Idowu Ajanaku, serving as State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, released a statement on Wednesday outlining governmental measures.
The multi-agency approach reflects recognition of urgent public health hazards arising from extended decomposition in the wetland zone, as the government seeks to prevent illness outbreaks while search-and-recovery crews continue operations near the incident site.
