Igbos Urged to Avoid Ethnic Politics by Ohanaeze Chieftain

Prof. Casmir Obialom, a chieftain of the Niger State chapter of the Igbo socio-cultural group Ohanaeze Ndigbo, called on Igbos to shun ethnic politics during a keynote address at the inauguration of new executives on Saturday.

He lamented that the presidency in Nigeria has eluded the Igbo largely due to ethnic politics. Obialom, who serves as a special adviser to the governor on inter-tribal affairs, highlighted the importance of Igbos contributing positively to national politics rather than creating divisions.

He noted that Nigeria comprises over 500 ethnic groups, and leadership should reflect this diversity. He dismissed the notion that the presidency is strictly a contest between the Hausa and Yoruba, advocating for a broader political strategy that includes all ethnic groups.

Obialom also emphasized that political planning should extend beyond the 2027 elections, advocating for long-term strategies to ensure Igbos are adequately represented in national leadership.
