IGP Acts to Limit Police Role in Political Disputes

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) is implementing measures to reduce police involvement in political disputes across Nigeria, as reported by sources familiar with the developments. This initiative follows a controversial police operation in Osun State, where local government secretariats were deployed amid disputes over the tenure of council chairmen, which is set to expire in October 2025.

The IGP is reviewing legal briefs and internal reports to ensure that the police are not perceived as supporting unlawful office occupancy. Consequently, the IGP plans to withdraw police personnel from the local government secretariat and redeploy them to routine duties.

This action is part of broader reforms aimed at reinforcing impartiality within the police force. Meanwhile, the Federal High Court in Osogbo dismissed applications from the All Progressives Congress (APC) seeking to delay proceedings regarding the tenure of local government officials, with Justice Demi Ajayi refusing to entertain further adjournments in the matter.
