IGP Orders Nationwide Audit of Police Arms and Ammunition

The Inspector General of Police has mandated an immediate nationwide audit of arms and ammunition across all state commands as part of efforts to enhance accountability and prevent the misuse of police weapons. This directive follows public outrage stemming from a viral video that depicted police officers shooting a restrained suspect at close range.

In response, four officers involved in the incident have been dismissed, and the case file has been forwarded to the Attorney General of the Federation for prosecution. The Inspector General emphasized that this audit is not a routine exercise but a critical accountability measure aimed at improving operational readiness and preventing the misuse of police assets.

He condemned the shooting incident as an unlawful act and a gross violation of professional standards. Furthermore, he instructed the Nigeria Police Force to conduct regular town hall meetings with community leaders to strengthen communication and improve rapid response to security concerns.
