Family Demands Release of Akpan from Police Detention

The family of Akpan, through their lawyer Edeh Uchenna, has petitioned Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu for the immediate release of Akpan, who was detained despite a court order from the FCT High Court. The petition asserts that Akpan's fundamental rights are being violated, as he has not been formally charged with any crime.

His detention stems from a police investigation related to a commercial dispute between his employer and another company. The lawyer emphasized that while the police have the authority to investigate, such powers must respect due process and judicial authority.

The petition calls for compliance with the court's release order and urges that any further investigations be conducted lawfully. The family clarified that they are not seeking immunity from investigation but are advocating for the respect of Akpan's constitutional rights and the proper handling of the underlying commercial issues through appropriate legal channels.
