NSCDC Detains Commandant and 23 Personnel Over Miners' Deaths

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has taken Commandant Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, the suspended Commandant, and 23 other personnel into custody due to the deaths of suspected illegal miners in their custody in Niger State. This action was confirmed by the Corps Public Relations Officer, ACC Babawale Afolabi, who stated that three additional personnel were suspended in connection with the incident.

A joint operation by the Commandant General's Special Investigation Squad (SIS) led to the detention of all officers linked to the misconduct on September 17, 2026. These personnel are undergoing interrogation and administrative disciplinary action and will be available for further investigation by the Presidential Independent Investigation Committee.

Commandant-General Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi assured that the investigation would be transparent, and any personnel found culpable would face disciplinary measures and legal action. A flag at NSCDC formations will be flown at half-mast for three days starting September 20, 2026, in remembrance of the deceased.
