IMF Endorses CBN Rate Cut to 23%, Urges Caution on Further Easing

The International Monetary Fund has supported Nigeria's central bank decision to lower interest rates, but warned against loosening monetary policy too quickly.
The International Monetary Fund has given its backing to the Central Bank of Nigeria's decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate to 23 percent, citing measurable progress in bringing down inflation across the country. Zeine Ould Zeidane, who leads the IMF's African Department, made this statement during a briefing at the joint IMF and World Bank meetings held in Thailand this month.
Zeidane noted that Nigeria had achieved substantial gains in controlling inflation after an extended period of price pressures and elevated real interest rates. However, the IMF official stressed that the rate reduction should not be interpreted as a shift toward a more relaxed monetary policy stance.
The Fund emphasized that monetary conditions remain restrictive even with the cut in place. The international body cautioned the CBN against moving too quickly with further interest rate decreases, warning that premature easing could reverse the inflation control progress already achieved.
Zeidane indicated that maintaining a tight monetary policy posture remains necessary until inflation stabilizes at sustainable levels. The message underscores the IMF's view that the September rate cut represents a measured adjustment rather than the start of a broader policy shift.
The CBN's decision to lower rates comes after months of aggressive monetary tightening aimed at curbing inflation that had reached elevated levels. The Fund's endorsement provides external validation for the central bank's policy direction at a time when Nigerian businesses and households have faced higher borrowing costs.
The IMF's guidance suggests the CBN should continue monitoring inflation data before considering additional rate reductions.
