Nigeria Immigration Service Calls for Collective Action on Migration

On Wednesday, Mrs Kemi Nandap, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, addressed the issue of irregular migration at a stakeholders’ sensitisation seminar in Abuja. The seminar, themed “Bridging the Information Gap: Promoting Informed, Safe and Regular Migration,” was aimed at fostering collaboration among traditional rulers, government agencies, and the public.
Nandap, represented by Deputy Comptroller-General Franca Nwanneka, stated that sophisticated border management systems alone cannot tackle the root causes of irregular migration. She stressed the necessity of providing prospective migrants with accurate and timely information to help them make informed decisions.
Nandap noted that many individuals migrate for legitimate reasons such as education and employment, but warned that misinformation could lead to serious risks, including human trafficking and migrant smuggling. She called for a collective approach to migration sensitisation, emphasizing that it is a shared responsibility that extends beyond the Nigeria Immigration Service.
