NIS Warns Against Human Trafficking and Travel Fraud

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a warning regarding the rising issues of human trafficking, migrant smuggling, and travel fraud, asserting that border controls alone are insufficient to combat irregular migration. This statement was made by Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap, represented by Deputy Comptroller-General Franca Nwanneka, during a Stakeholder Sensitisation and Engagement Seminar in Abuja.
The seminar, themed “Bridging the Information Gap: Promoting Informed, Safe and Regular Migration,” highlighted the dangers posed by misinformation and inadequate access to reliable migration information. Nandap stressed the importance of equipping prospective migrants with accurate information to make informed decisions regarding their safety and future.
She noted that while migration is often pursued for education, employment, and safety, misinformation can lead to serious risks. The NIS is working on strengthening its operational capacity through reforms and technology, but acknowledges that technology alone cannot address the root causes of irregular migration.
