Imo State Government Delays Local Elections Amid Legal Dispute

The Imo State Government has indefinitely postponed local government elections that were set for Saturday, September 26, 2026. This decision was announced during court proceedings at the Imo State High Court in Owerri on September 23, 2026.

The case was initiated by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and four of its officials against the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC), its chairman, and the Attorney-General of Imo State, Paul Obinatu. The Attorney-General informed the court that the postponement was made to address issues raised by APGA and to ensure compliance with legal requirements, allowing APGA an opportunity to participate in the elections.

A new date for the elections has not been announced. The postponement was not due to a court injunction, and the application by APGA to stop the elections remains part of the ongoing case.

The court proceedings also included an application regarding substituted service, which was withdrawn by the plaintiffs. The case is adjourned until October 30, 2026, for mention.
