APGA Seeks Court Order to Halt Imo Council Elections

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has requested the Imo State High Court, Owerri Judicial Division, to issue an injunction against the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) to halt the local government elections scheduled for September 26, 2026. This request was formalized in Suit No.

HOW/1380/2026, filed on September 16. APGA, along with four state executives, argues that ISIEC's 360-day Notice of Election, issued on September 18, 2025, was defective as it did not specify an election date, violating the Electoral Act.

They contend that ISIEC's announcement on September 11, 2026, fixing the election date was too late to rectify the earlier notice's defects. Citing a 2025 Supreme Court ruling regarding Rivers State local government elections, APGA emphasizes the necessity of adhering to statutory requirements, including the Notice of Election and voters’ register provisions.

Furthermore, they assert that the Electoral Act 2022, under which the previous notice was issued, has been repealed by the Electoral Act 2026, which took effect in February.
