Imo State Electoral Commission Sets New Election Date for 2026

The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) announced that the local government council elections will now take place on November 14, 2026. This decision was communicated in a press release signed by the Chairman, Charles Ejiogu, following consultations with key stakeholders, including the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and registered political parties.
The elections were initially set for September 26, 2026, but were postponed due to a request from some IPAC members for an extension of the electoral timetable. Although ISIEC had proposed a new date of November 7, 2026, further discussions revealed that this date was unrealistic, leading to the rescheduling.
The elections will determine 27 Local Government Council Chairmen and 305 Councillors. ISIEC has instructed all registered political parties to collect the official election timetable and guidelines from its headquarters and has expressed its commitment to conducting free and credible elections.
