Six Dead, 129 Missing in Indonesia Ferry Capsize

On Sunday, Indonesia’s search and rescue agency reported that six individuals have died and 129 are missing following a ferry mishap. The ferry, which was carrying 243 people, including 30 crew members, lost contact with authorities early on Sunday.

Rescuers have successfully pulled 108 survivors from the water. Dudy Purwagandhi, Indonesia’s Transport Minister, stated that a helicopter spotted the capsized vessel, while the cause of the incident remains under investigation.

The agency’s Banjarmasin office head, Putu Sudayana, confirmed that rescued passengers were transferred to other vessels, with some being taken to a port in East Java. Survivor Rinto Arahab described clinging to the ship’s railings as it overturned.

Families of the missing gathered at a rescue center, with one relative, Putri, expressing concern for her husband, Herman, who was on board. The ferry had departed from Surabaya in East Java on Saturday.
