INEC Reports Ageing Causes Youth Voter Decline Ahead of 2027

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that the decrease in the percentage of young voters ahead of the 2027 general election is due to ageing among previously registered youths, not a lack of interest in elections. INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, provided this explanation during the grand finale of the commission’s Campus Debate at the University of Abuja.
Currently, young people represent 29.79% of the voters’ register for the upcoming elections, a drop from 39.65% recorded in the 2023 general election. Amupitan noted that this decline is primarily because individuals classified as youths in 2023 have now moved into older age brackets.
He also mentioned that the current register is under review through a claims and objections process. The campus debate aimed to combat voter apathy among young Nigerians and enhance their understanding of the electoral process.
The University of Jos won the debate, followed by Bayero University, Kano, and the University of Ibadan.
