INEC Captures 137,487 PWDs for Inclusive 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reported capturing 137,487 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) for the upcoming 2027 elections. This figure was announced during a national strategy engagement held in Abuja with executive members of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) and Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs).

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, represented by Acting Chairman and National Commissioner, Prof. Rhoda Gumus, detailed the breakdown of PWDs captured: 13,080 visually impaired, 9,299 hearing impaired, 30,561 with albinism, 19,430 with physical impairments, and 54,941 in other disability categories. The engagement, themed “On improved targeted sensitisation and mobilisation of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs),” aimed to increase turnout and participation in the elections.

Amupitan emphasized the importance of collaboration with JONAPWD and OPDs to ensure no eligible voter is left behind, aligning with the Electoral Act, 2026, and the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.
