INEC Commits to Inclusive Elections for Persons With Disabilities

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), represented by Resident Electoral Commissioner Prof. Anugbum Onuoha, committed to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections during a sensitization event for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) and electoral officers in Uyo, Akwa Ibom. Onuoha emphasized the need for relevant authorities to assist PWDs in obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participating in elections.
He criticized the government for not being fair to PWDs and urged for their inclusion in appointments and benefits. Onuoha called for preferential treatment for PWDs at polling units, similar to that given to the elderly and pregnant women.
Mr. Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, state director of the National Orientation Agency, praised INEC's efforts and encouraged PWDs to engage in the electoral process. Mr. Aniete Jackson, Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities in Akwa Ibom, expressed gratitude for INEC's initiatives aimed at strengthening disability inclusion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
