INEC Faces Probe Over Missing ₦55.9bn Election Funds, SERAP Demands Accountability

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is under investigation for allegedly mismanaging ₦55.9 billion meant for purchasing smart card readers and ballot papers for the 2019 general elections. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has demanded an explanation from the new INEC chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan.

SERAP highlighted inconsistencies in procurement processes and lack of transparency in fund utilization, raising concerns about the credibility of Nigeria's democratic process. The audit revealed irregularities in payments to contractors without proper documentation, casting doubts on the integrity of INEC's financial management.
