FCT Council Polls Signal 2027 Election Dynamics

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections, held on February 22, 2026, are viewed as a litmus test for the upcoming 2027 general elections. The All Progressives Congress (APC) won in six councils, while the People's Democratic Party (PDP) emerged in Gwagwalada.

This election marked a significant moment for the APC, as it was the first time in a long while that they dominated the area council polls. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted the elections under the new 2026 Electoral Act, which mandates electronic transmission of results.

Despite facing logistical challenges, including delays in result announcements, INEC reported a 93% result upload to their iRev portal. The elections were characterized by a high level of preparedness, with transport unions providing 1,132 vehicles to facilitate the movement of personnel.

However, delays were noted in the Kuje area council due to difficult terrain, with results announced later than expected.
