FCT Council Polls Set for February 2026: Key Details

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council Polls are set for February 21, 2026, involving the election of six area council chairpersons and councilors. A total of 1,680,315 registered voters will participate across 2,822 polling units in six area councils: Abaji, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kwali, and Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

There are 570 candidates contesting for 68 positions, including chairmen, vice chairmen, and councilorship seats. Political analysts believe the contest will be fierce, particularly in AMAC, which is seen as a stronghold for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Key candidates include Zakka Christoph of the APC and Paul Mose Ogidi of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The elections are viewed as a critical test for political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially following the APC's defeat in the 2023 presidential elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is preparing to ensure a hitch-free electoral process.
