INEC Launches NIN Verification to Curb Duplicate Voter Registrations

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the introduction of National Identification Number (NIN) verification to eliminate duplicate voter registrations across Nigeria. INEC Chairman Prof.

Joash Amupitan revealed this plan on Wednesday during a meeting with NIMC Director General Engr. Abisoy Coker Odusot at INEC's headquarters in Abuja.

The partnership was made possible by the enactment of the National Identity Management Commission Act 2026, which provides a stronger legal framework for cooperation between government institutions on identity management. INEC has already initiated an online Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) platform that requires applicants to provide their NIN as part of the registration process.

This integration aims to help INEC detect and remove duplicate records, ensuring that only eligible citizens are captured in the voter register. Amupitan emphasized the importance of accurate and reliable identity data for conducting credible elections and preventing abuse of the voter registration process.

Odusot reaffirmed NIMC's readiness to support INEC in strengthening identity verification for electoral purposes.
