INEC Urged to Halt Transfer of Enugu REC to Imo State

The Imo State Coalition, comprising various civil society organizations, has formally petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to stop the alleged plan to redeploy Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Enugu State, to Imo State.

This request follows concerns over past electoral controversies, particularly surrounding the February 2022 Ngor Okpala State Constituency elections, which attracted allegations of irregularities. The coalition, which includes groups such as the Democratic Rights and Liberties Organization and the Alaigbo Democracy Accountability Network, issued a joint statement on February 13, emphasizing that such a transfer could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

They called for immediate clarification from INEC and warned that the move could create political suspicion in a sensitive environment. As of the time of reporting, INEC had not issued an official statement regarding the alleged transfer.

The coalition stressed the importance of demonstrating neutrality to maintain public trust in the electoral system.
