CAN Declares National Mourning Amid Rising Insecurity

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has announced a three-day national mourning period from June 12 to June 14, 2026, due to the worsening security situation in the country. This decision was made during a summit held on Tuesday in Abuja.

The mourning period will culminate in a "Black Sunday" on June 14, 2026, to honor victims of violence. CAN expressed deep concern over the escalation of violence, including kidnappings, terrorist attacks, and other forms of brutality across Nigeria.

They condemned these acts and called for the federal government to declare a state of emergency on security. The association urged the government to protect lives and property, enhance intelligence gathering, and improve inter-agency cooperation to combat terrorism and violent crime.

They also advocated for the immediate release of abducted individuals and the establishment of rehabilitation programs for victims of violence. The leaders emphasized the need for political leaders to prioritize national security over political calculations.
