Lawmakers Demand Action on Nigeria's Escalating Insecurity

On a recent date, Nigerian lawmakers, led by Osonwa Sulaiman Abubakar Gumi, summoned security chiefs and the Finance Minister due to escalating insecurity, particularly banditry and kidnappings affecting communities and schools across Nigeria. Despite substantial resources allocated for security operations, banditry continues to thrive, leading to deadly attacks and mass abductions, notably in Zamfara State.

Gumi highlighted the humanitarian crisis driven by armed banditry and cited the recent abduction of seven students from the Federal Polytechnic in Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, who remain captive despite ransom payments. Lawmakers questioned the effectiveness of security spending and called for President Bola Tinubu to deploy a comprehensive security strategy to dismantle bandit strongholds.

They urged the Minister of Defence to deploy troops and enhance military operations in Zamfara State. Additionally, lawmakers called for non-kinetic approaches to address the socio-economic conditions fueling crime, emphasizing the need for transparency in the allocation and utilization of security funds.
