$145M Solar Plant to Boost Abia's Renewable Energy Sector

Investors have committed to a $145 million solar panel manufacturing plant in Umuelel, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, Abia State, with plans to position the state as Nigeria's renewable energy manufacturing hub. The project will be executed through a public-private partnership, with MD Nwakamma Nigeria Ltd collaborating with a Chinese technical partner.

The first tranche of funding is scheduled for release at the end of September 2026. Governor Alex Otti welcomed the investors on Thursday, July 17, 2026, describing the project as a strong vote of confidence in Abia's improved business climate and a significant step towards his administration's vision of making the state a preferred destination for local and international investors.

Otti assured that all necessary land and resources would be made available for the project. The facility will prioritize skill acquisition for Abia youth, with plans for advanced training in solar manufacturing in China for selected workers.
