IPI Nigeria Secures Release of Journalist Stanlei Ugagb

Stanlei Ugagb, a journalist with Secret Reporters, was released from police custody on July 6, 2026, after intervention by the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria. Ugagb was arrested in Abuja on allegations related to espionage and cyberstalking.

Following his arrest last Wednesday, IPI Nigeria issued a statement confirming their efforts to establish his whereabouts and engage with relevant authorities. The organization reported that Ugagb was held by the Nigeria Police Force at the National Cybercrime Centre.

IPI Nigeria's President, Musikilu Moje, and legal advisor, Tobi Soniyi, were involved in negotiations for his release, which was facilitated by police authorities. Although Ugagb was granted bail, police investigations into the allegations against him are ongoing.

IPI Nigeria commended the police for facilitating his release and stated that they would continue to monitor the case closely.
