IPI Nigeria Urges New IGP to Protect Press Freedom

The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria has called upon the newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tunji Disu, to prioritize the protection of press freedom and the safety of journalists across Nigeria.

In a statement signed by IPI Nigeria President Musikilu Mojeed and legal adviser Tobi Soniyi, the organization urged Mr. Disu to immediately halt the pattern of harassment, intimidation, and attacks against journalists that characterized the tenure of his predecessor, Mr.

Kayode Egbetokun. IPI Nigeria highlighted the unlawful detention and assault of journalists as violations of their constitutional duties and the fundamental rights of Nigerians, including freedom of expression and press.

The organization expects the new Inspector General to ensure that police officers respect these rights and called for a review of pending cases targeting journalists performing their legitimate duties. IPI Nigeria expressed its readiness to engage constructively with the new police leadership to promote mutual respect between law enforcement and the media, emphasizing the essential role of a free and independent press in strengthening democracy and accountability in Nigeria.
