New IGP Disu Urged to Reform Nigeria Police Force

Olatunji Disu, the newly appointed Inspector General of Police, has been urged by security experts, including Sule Momodu, to adopt a comprehensive reform agenda for the Nigeria Police Force. Recommendations include implementing intelligence-led policing to replace reliance on checkpoints and routine patrols, enhancing operational standards in line with international best practices, and improving officer welfare through better remuneration, uniforms, and working conditions.

Momodu emphasized the need for adequate logistics and the deployment of various patrol methods, including motorcycles and foot patrols, particularly in hard-to-reach areas. He also called for the full implementation of the Police Act, especially provisions related to community policing and the establishment of specialized units.

The recommendations aim to restore public trust in the police and ensure effective service delivery. Additionally, there is a push for the reactivation of police call centers and the establishment of community policing committees at the local government level to strengthen community relations.
