Iran Challenges US Airspace Restrictions at ICAO

Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization has filed a formal complaint with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) concerning US-led airspace restrictions that have severely impacted Iranian carriers. These restrictions, which came into effect following a US Treasury compliance deadline on 23 September 2026, prohibit foreign companies from engaging in business with Iranian airlines.

Consequently, operators in the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and parts of Iraq have halted flights. Iranian authorities argue that these measures violate the 1944 Chicago Convention, which is designed to ensure the safety and openness of civil aviation, labeling the sanctions as “economic terrorism” and “collective punishment” against 27 national airlines.

Iran is urging ICAO to conduct an urgent review of how these unilateral financial restrictions affect civilian flight safety and is advocating for a definitive stance that commercial aviation should remain unaffected by geopolitical conflicts. The situation raises questions about how global aviation authorities can reconcile national security sanctions with the safety of civilian travel.
