Iran Negotiates to Move 2026 World Cup Matches to Mexico

Iran's football federation is in negotiations with FIFA to relocate its scheduled 2026 World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico. This decision comes in light of safety concerns for the Iranian national team amid ongoing U.S.-Israeli military actions and the potential for conflict in the Gulf region.

The matches are set to take place between June 11 and July 19, 2026, with Iran scheduled to play against New Zealand on June 16, Belgium on June 21, and Egypt in Los Angeles on June 27. Mehdi Taj, the president of the Iranian football federation, announced the discussions via social media, emphasizing the need for player safety.

A FIFA spokesperson confirmed that they maintain regular contact with member associations, including Iran, and are looking forward to the team's participation in the tournament. The last match schedule announcement is set for December 6, 2025.
