Iran Seeks to Relocate 2026 World Cup Matches to Mexico

The Iranian Football Federation, under the leadership of President Mehdi Taj, is reportedly in discussions with FIFA to move Iran's matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup from the United States to Mexico. This decision arises from safety concerns after recent U.S. airstrikes, which resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader.

Iranian authorities have indicated that they cannot guarantee the safety of the national team in the U.S., particularly after U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he cannot ensure the security of Iranian nationals.

The negotiations aim to secure a location for Iran's matches, as the country has qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament scheduled to take place in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico starting June 11. Currently, Iran is slated to play two group matches in Los Angeles and Seattle, but discussions are ongoing to alter the match locations due to the highlighted intersection of geopolitics and sports.
