Iran Postpones Hormuz Talks, Sanctions 77 Vessels

On September 14, Iran postponed a planned meeting with Gulf powers to discuss shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Concurrently, Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority sanctioned 77 vessels for allegedly violating its protocols amid escalating tensions in the region.

These tensions were exacerbated by recent attacks involving Yemen’s Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia, which the Houthis described as retaliation for Saudi airstrikes on Yemen. The authority published a list of vessels facing restrictions, including possible fines, detention, or confiscation, and warned that vessels cooperating with sanctioned ships could also be penalized.

The sanctions list was first announced on August 23 and has been updated since. As a result of these developments, oil prices increased by over 2.5%, raising concerns about further disruptions to crude supplies.

The situation has already affected petrol prices in Nigeria, with increases noted across major cities, as crude prices remain above $100 per barrel.
