Iran Closes Strait of Hormuz, Threatens Ships Passing

Iran has announced that it has closed the Strait of Hormuz and warned that it will attack any ships attempting to navigate through this vital maritime route. The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Gulf of Oman to the Arabian Sea, is only 21 miles (33 km) wide at its narrowest point, with the shipping lane being just 2 miles (3 km) wide.

This strait is significant as it facilitates the passage of about 20 million barrels of crude oil and condensate daily, according to data from the analytical firm Vortexa. The strait is a critical passage for OPEC member countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Iraq, which export crude oil primarily to Asia.

Additionally, Qatar, one of the world's largest exporters of liquefied natural gas, also utilizes this route for its LNG shipments.
