Iran Threatens to Close Strait of Hormuz Amid U.S. Blockade

Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz if the United States continues its naval blockade, which began a week ago. Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that the Strait will not remain open under continued blockade conditions.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei called the blockade a violation of a ceasefire agreement that was established to facilitate talks between the U.S. and Iran. President Donald Trump, while in Arizona, mentioned that negotiations for a broader peace deal with Iran are progressing, although he reaffirmed the U.S. naval blockade will persist if no agreement is reached.

The situation escalated following a ceasefire in Lebanon, which has allowed for the return of displaced families. The conflict in Lebanon, involving Hezbollah and Israeli forces, began on March 2, and Iran insists that halting hostilities is part of a larger agreement to resolve regional conflicts.
