Iran Threatens to Close Strait of Hormuz Amid U.S. Tensions

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced that it would completely close the Strait of Hormuz if U.S. President Donald Trump follows through on threats to destroy Iran's power plants.

This statement came after Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum on Saturday night. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian responded, asserting that shipping routes would remain open unless Iran's sovereignty was violated.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, emphasized that the destruction of Iran's energy infrastructure would be considered a legitimate target. The situation has led to a de facto blockade, causing a surge in global oil prices.

French President Emmanuel Macron urged restraint and proposed a temporary halt to attacks on civilian energy infrastructure to facilitate dialogue. He reaffirmed France's commitment to defend Saudi airspace against Iranian missile strikes.

Meanwhile, the European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kalla, engaged in discussions with Iranian officials regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the urgent need for diplomatic solutions.
