Islamic cleric's push for Muslim-Muslim ticket sparks backlash in Kano

An Islamic cleric's recent statements endorsing Muslim-Muslim presidential tickets for the 2027 elections have triggered sharp criticism from prominent Nigerians across politics and civil society. Sheikh Yahaya Jingir made the remarks at a mass wedding event in Kano State organised by the state government, where he publicly backed President Bola Tinubu's re-election and praised the administration's adoption of a Muslim running mate.

Former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso issued a statement rejecting Jingir's position, saying the people of Kano do not support such divisive messaging. Kwankwaso called on religious figures to prioritise national unity rather than inflammatory rhetoric.

The cleric's comments, which included characterisations of Christians as 'infidels' according to multiple reports, drew similar condemnation from Rev Joseph Hayab, chairman of the Northern Christian Association, who accused Jingir of promoting religious discrimination. Ambassador-designate Femi Fani-Kayode warned that Jingir's statements could harm President Tinubu's electoral prospects by driving away Christian voters whose support remains crucial for 2027.

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju added that the remarks risk deepening religious tensions in Nigeria's plural society, urging religious leaders to use their platforms for peacebuilding instead. Other critics, including Barrister Solomon Dalung and activist Isa Sanusi, described Jingir's advocacy as a manipulation of faith for political purposes.

Jingir reiterated his position at a subsequent gathering with All Progressives Congress governors, reaffirming his view that Muslim-Muslim tickets align with Islamic principles. The cleric's continued public statements on the matter have made him a focal point in renewed debate over religious representation in Nigeria's electoral system ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
