Israeli Rights Group Challenges Death Penalty Bill in Court

An Israeli rights group has announced the filing of a petition with the Supreme Court to challenge a death penalty bill that was approved by lawmakers on March 30, 2026. The bill permits the execution of Palestinian convicts involved in deadly terror attacks.

The rights group is demanding the annulment of this law, arguing on two grounds: first, that the Knesset lacks the authority to legislate for the West Bank, which is under Israeli occupation and holds no sovereignty; and second, that the law is unconstitutional as it violates the right to life, human dignity, due process, and equal protection under Israel's basic law regarding human dignity and liberty. The petition was filed shortly after the bill was passed by the Knesset.
