Mike Igini Critiques E-Transmission Debate in Nigeria

Mike Igini, the former Resident Electoral Commissioner, expressed his disappointment regarding the ongoing debate about electronic transmission of election results in Nigeria. Speaking on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television, Igini lamented that Nigeria remains backward in electoral reform, a process that should have been resolved years ago.

He referenced the reforms initiated during the tenure of former INEC Chairman Attahiru Jega and noted the frustration felt by many regarding the current state of electoral reform. Igini highlighted that for three decades, advocacy for electoral reform has been ongoing, yet recent developments feel like a waste of effort.

He warned that reintroducing uncertainty around electronic transmission could create serious challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections. Igini urged lawmakers to learn from past experiences and emphasized the importance of the INEC Result Viewing Portal (iRev) having clear legal backing to ensure that reform efforts are not derailed.
