Italian Athlete Mattia Debertolis Dies After Collapsing At World Games In China

Italian athlete Mattia Debertolis, 29, tragically passed away after collapsing during the men's final at the World Games in China on August 8. Despite being found unconscious, he succumbed to his condition four days later.

The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) released a statement confirming his death, citing the extreme weather conditions in Chengdu, with high temperatures and humidity. Debertolis was a skilled orienteer, navigating unmarked courses using a map and compass to reach control points swiftly.

He had represented Italy in multiple World Championships and World Cups, ranking 137th in the Orienteering World Rankings. The World Games, held every four years, saw Debertolis and 11 other athletes compete in the final event, with Switzerland's Riccardo Rancan finishing in 12th place.

The IOF has promised to pay tribute to Debertolis, with condolences pouring in from the sporting world.
