Iba Police DPO Initiates Monitoring After Extortion Claims

CSP Talabi Segun, the Divisional Police Officer of Iba Police Division, has begun monitoring police personnel in response to a report by Politics Nigeria regarding extortion at six checkpoints along LASU-Igando Road. He encouraged commercial drivers experiencing extortion to lodge formal complaints at his office for appropriate action against the involved officers.
Drivers reported that payments were demanded irrespective of whether they had committed traffic offenses or had complete vehicle documents. Chukwuebuka Onwuka, a commercial driver since 2022, noted that the payments had increased from N50 to N200 at each checkpoint, with six checkpoints identified along the route.
He estimated that commercial drivers collectively paid N3,600 daily in these alleged collections. Another driver, Frank, confirmed similar experiences despite having all necessary documents, highlighting the excessive number of checkpoints.
CSP Segun previously urged drivers to refrain from making unofficial payments and to report any officers demanding money.
