NAWOJ Urges Passage of Special Seats Bill for Women

On International Women's Day 2026, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) urged the National Assembly and governors of the North Central region to prioritize the passage of the Special Seats Bill. This proposed legislation seeks to create additional seats for women in national and state assemblies as a temporary measure to address the longstanding underrepresentation of women in political leadership.

Mr. Chizoba Ogbech, the Vice President of NAWOJ Zone D, emphasized that despite women constituting nearly half of Nigeria's population, their representation in political decision-making remains critically low. The statement highlighted the importance of investing in women's socio-economic empowerment and political participation to foster national development.

NAWOJ reiterated the need for civil society, media, and political parties to support this initiative ahead of the 2027 general elections, aiming for a more inclusive governance structure that better represents the interests of families and communities.
