Nigerian Runners Shine at 2026 Abeokuta 10KM Race

Musa Francis James and Akanbi Aderonke Olufunmilayo emerged as the champions of the 2026 Great Abeokuta 10KM Race held on October 3. James won the men's race with a time of 30:25.33, followed by Ilya Raymond and Gyang Sunday.

Akanbi dominated the women's category, finishing in 35:00.69, with Bulus Mary Jah and Nwantiyi Teyei Davou in second and third place, respectively. This edition marked the return of the race after a hiatus in 2025 and was exclusively for Nigerian athletes to enhance opportunities for local runners.

Despite the restriction, the prize purse remained the same as in previous years, with winners receiving $1,000 and runners-up earning $750 and $500. The event attracted notable figures, including Sunday Dare and Bukola Olopade, who praised the equal prize money initiative.

The race was initially scheduled for September 26 but was postponed due to logistical reasons. Yetunde Olopade, CEO of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, acknowledged the support from the Ogun State Government.
