Jigawa Communities Implement Flood Emergency Plans

Communities in Jigawa State have proactively adopted emergency response plans to mitigate flood risks in anticipation of the 2026 rainy season, following forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) that identified 15 local government areas as flood-prone. The response plan, developed with support from the Nigerian Red Cross Society, UNICEF, and the European Union, aims to protect lives, livelihoods, and property during emergencies.

The plan was launched during a stakeholder meeting in Auyo Local Government Area, where it was noted that affected communities are highly exposed to seasonal floods that often destroy farmland and displace families. The plan outlines key actions, including emergency response procedures and early recovery measures.

Muhammad Bala Sanusi, the Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), highlighted the state's significant progress in flood mitigation compared to previous years, with the government earmarking N300 million for procuring emergency relief items and establishing local emergency management committees across the state.
