Jonathan Fights Lawsuit to Contest 2027 Presidential Election

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is contesting a lawsuit that seeks to bar him from participating in the 2027 presidential election. The suit was filed by Johnmari Jideobi, who argues that Jonathan is ineligible to run again due to having served two terms as president.

The case is currently before the Federal High Court in Abuja, with a hearing scheduled for October 6, 2025. Jonathan's legal representatives, led by Chief Chris Uche, filed a counter affidavit asserting that the lawsuit is incompetent and lacks merit.

They maintain that the plaintiff has no legal standing and that the issues raised have already been settled in a previous judgment by the Federal High Court in Yenagoa on May 27, 2022. Jonathan's team argues that the constitutional provisions cited by the plaintiff do not apply retrospectively and that the suit is based on speculation rather than concrete evidence.
