Diezani Alison-Madueke's Trial Enters Final Stage in London

The trial of Diezani Alison-Madueke, former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum Resources, has reached its final stage at Southwark Crown Court in London. Judge Justin Thornton provided detailed directions to the jury, emphasizing that their decision must be based solely on the evidence presented in court.

The prosecution, led by Alexandra Healy KC, alleges that Alison-Madueke accepted improper financial advantages during her tenure, which involved significant public trust. The judge instructed jurors to disregard any external influences, including Nigerian political context and media coverage.

He outlined the legal tests they must apply, including whether Alison-Madueke accepted financial benefits through intermediaries and whether she was aware of any improper payments intended to influence business decisions involving Emmanuel Kachikwu. The prosecution highlighted a $1 million payment linked to businessman Benedict Peter, arguing it was part of a scheme to conceal the true nature of transactions.

The jury is expected to deliberate on the eight counts against Alison-Madueke and return a verdict later this week.
