Nigeria's Presidency Advances State Police Initiative

The Nigerian Presidency has announced significant progress in the establishment of state police and anticipated constitutional amendments. This announcement follows months of consultations among executive officials and top security authorities, particularly in response to recent mass abductions in Oyo State.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has accused the federal government of hindering the creation of a sub-national police structure. During a high-level consultative meeting at the State House, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila noted that while the framework for state police is gaining traction, establishing decentralized policing requires careful legal considerations and cannot be rushed.

He expressed optimism that amendments will be forthcoming, emphasizing that the establishment of state police is a complex process involving significant legal frameworks. The meeting included key figures such as Deputy President of the Senate Jibrin Barau, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, and Inspector General Tunji Disu.
