Nigerian Senate Extends 2025 Capital Budget to 2026

On September 29, 2026, the Nigerian Senate reconvened after their annual recess and quickly adjourned until October 13, 2026. During this session, they extended the implementation of the capital component of the 2025 budget to December 31, 2026.

This extension is the fourth since December 2025, following earlier extensions to March 31, June 30, and September 30 of 2026. The total budget for 2025 is ₦54.99 trillion, which includes ₦3.65 trillion for statutory transfers, ₦14.32 trillion for debt servicing, ₦13.64 trillion for recurrent expenditure, and approximately ₦23.96 trillion for capital projects.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed concerns about national issues such as insecurity, kidnapping, flooding, and the rising cost of living, emphasizing the need for the Senate's performance to positively impact citizens' lives. He highlighted the ongoing struggles of families affected by violence during the Senate's recess.
