National Assembly Extends 2025 Budget Deadline Again

On September 30, 2026, the National Assembly extended the implementation deadline for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act from September 30 to December 31, 2026. This extension is the fourth for the 2025 capital budget, aimed at providing ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) sufficient time to complete capital projects with already appropriated funds.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele emphasized that various factors, such as procurement procedures and contract execution, necessitated this extension to avoid administrative and legal challenges that could lead to project abandonment. Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin supported the measure, while Minority Leader Abba Moro urged caution against politicizing the debate.

The House of Representatives also approved the extension, with House Leader Julius Ihonvbere citing economic challenges affecting project completion. The initial deadline was first extended in December 2025, with subsequent extensions to March 31, June 30, and September 30.

This latest decision allows MDAs an additional three months to utilize funds from the 2025 capital budget.
